Heavy rainfall in the winter of 2010 pulled California out of a three-year drought. The rain endured into a cool spring, where record-breaking low temperatures delayed budbreak and pushed flowering back into June. The late flowering in combination with the cool summer that followed precipitated a late harvest. An intense heat spike in late August caused damage in vineyards across Sonoma County. Through meticulous sorting of damaged fruit and thoughtful selection throughout each block in our vineyards, we were able to produce a well-balanced concentration of flavor and quality in our wines in spite of the adversities of the growing season.
Lush, deep black fruit set against a backdrop of mocha, tar, spice and elegant vanilla. Masculine yet perfumed, this wine is alluring initially with ample mid-palate richness. Supple and dense in its structure, this concentration leads seamlessly to a firm and expansive finish. It will reward those who lay it down for a few years, but is approachable now with adequate aeration.
