The beginning of the drought in California revealed itself in 2013, presenting challenges in the vineyards. The 2013 growing season started with a warm spring that brought high winds and very little rain. These conditions produced shorter shoots and a more restricted canopy that resulted in small berry sizes, creating intense flavor concentration and structure to this vintage’s wines. Just like 2012, the 2013 summer was consistently warm without any massive heat spikes, which led to a very even ripening curve. The early harvest produced a smaller crop of the highest quality fruit. Like 2012, the 2013 vintage will be one that will be remembered for its prodigious quality.
The 2013 vintage marks the inaugural vintage of our Armor Plate Zinfandel. Ruby-colored in the glass, this wine displays bright aromatic notes of strawberry, black cherry and apricot, with tones of violets and graphite lingering in the background. The palate is layered with lush, sweet dark fruits and mocha. The opulent entry gives way to a juicy mid-palate that plays a balanced counterpoint to the firmly cored structure, with an elegant persistence on the finish. The result is a rich, balanced and youthful wine with years of ageing potential.
